GROWS LANDFILL DESIGN BUILD AMMONIA
REMOVAL PROJECT
gROWS LANDFILL
FALLS TOWNSHIP, BUCKS COUNTY, PA
FINAL CONTRACT PRICE: $1,087,041.00
COMPLETION DATE: DECEMBER 31,2006
When
Waste Management first contacted Stone Hill Contracting, to submit a proposal to
Design-Build an Ammonia removal system, the system the Owner had in mind was an
Air Stripping Tower. During the bid process it was noted that the efficiency of
utilizing an Air Stripping Tower to remove the high volume of Ammonia (taking
the ammonia content from about 1500 ppm to 50 ppm) did not seem to be an
effective process. When Stone Hill submitted their proposal they provided
pricing for the requested system, but also offered an alternative. The
alternative was to supply an SBR system to remove the Ammonia. Along with the
project Engineer, Metcalf and Eddy, Stone Hill developed a plan that would work
efficiently and also utilize existing infrastructure in order to minimize costs.
In the end, Stone Hill converted a previously erected storage tank into the SBR.
The most ironic portion of the project was that the majority of the
infrastructure that Stone Hill utilized, was actually constructed by Stone Hill
only about a year earlier, under a separate contract. When the new system came
on line, everyone was well pleased, as the new system not only met the effluent
requirements it beat them. The project only took about four (4) months of onsite
work, but it was quite rewarding when the test results started to come in.
The
cooperation of all people throughout the design and construction process made
this project a success, and special thanks needs to go the the Design Engineer
(Metcalf and Eddy, Inc.), the Owner (Waste Management Disposal Services of PA),
the Electrical Contractor (Tangibl, LLC), and also Stone Hill's Suppliers and
Subcontractors, including:
